The 2010 edition of the OFM World Championships finished over the weekend, but which of the contestants walked away with the coveted prize of OFM World Champion?
With the Qualification for the 2010 World Championships starting in September 2009, the whole competition has taken nearly a year to complete, and congratulations must be offered to those who managed to qualify for the First Round leagues, which started in April. Since then, 32 managers progressed to the Semi-Finals, who were then whittled down to 16 lucky competitors who made up the 2010 World Championship Final, all vying for the honour of becoming World Champion.
Whilst the whole league was an incredibly tight affair, with no manager giving any quarter, eventually one manager emerged clear, leading the World Referees to first place by 5 points; gheorghe sorin. With only 8 defeats, gheorghe was the only manager to keep his losses column in single figures, and with 18 victories, more than any other finalist, gheorghe's victory was well deserved. Scoring a massive 74 goals, and ending up with a Goal Difference of +43, gheorghe was easily the most productive in the final third. At the other end, Doffman marshalled his defence the best throughout, conceding a mere 24 goals in 30 games; less than a goal a game, on average. Meanwhile, Doru Vasile was the only manager to play the whole league without drawing at all; talk about all or nothing!
So as the World Championships draw to a close for another year, it only remains for me to remind you that qualification for next year's event begins on the first of September 2010, to wish you all the best with your quest, and to congratulate all of those who took part in the event; not just those who did well, but those who gave it their all regardless of their level of success.
It seems fitting that the last words should go to the new World Champion, and I was luckily able to speak to gheorghe a few days ago, and these were his thoughts:
quote:
When I started playing this game , 3 years ago, I never hoped that I'll become World Champion. It's a pleasure being the first Romanian World Champion, and I hope that I won't be the last! It was a tough battle but in the end I've proved that I'm the best. To be honest at the beginning of this competition I wasn't even sure that I would make it to the Semi-Finals, but I believed in my chance. It was tiny at the beginning, but I put hope in it and when I saw the chance I took advantage of it.
Also I want to congratulate all the managers that took part at this WC, especially my crew mates, they've also done a terrific job. I want to underline that this isn't a personal victory; it's a victory for the the Romanian Community, and in this way I want to thank all the Romanian managers that suported me until the end.
With this victory I hope that I gave ambitions to the rest of the Romanian managers, and I hope that they see that it's possible for a Romanian to become World Champion. I hope that next year a Romanian will obtain the title, why not me again?
